WHAT'S PRAGMATICS?
A subfield of linguistics developed
in the late 1970s, pragmatics studies how people comprehend and produce a
communicative act or speech act in a concrete speech situation which is usually
a conversation.
"Pragmatists
focus on what is not explicitly stated and on how we interpret utterances in
situational contexts. They are concerned not so much with the sense of what is
said as with its force, that is, with what is communicated by the manner and
style of an utterance."
